It Came from the Metro: Rapunzel
I think I’ve written about this before but just to give you a bit of background on our fair city, most of us are on a schedule. We have places to go, people to see, etc. No one likes to deviate from their schedule so chances are that if you ride the Metro at the same time every day, you will see some of the same people every day and furthermore, if you ride in the same train car every day, you will probably even sit with the same people each day. Schedules control us all it would seem
For the past couple weeks or so, I’ve ridden the train with this woman. She looks either in her late 30s or early 40s. She’s short, maybe about five-foot-nothing or something of the like. She has long, long, long hair down to her butt. This woman seems to like to use her hair as both a scarf and a blanket. She drapes it around her neck; she pulls it tight across her chest. She always has her hands on her hair; pulling it tight, puffing it out, rinse, repeat. It’s both entrancing and amusing to watch and makes me terribly glad that I don’t have long hair like that; I would be playing with it all day as well. I don’t think she works in an office since she is always in jeans and a t-shirt (we definitely live in dress-up land if you work in an office) but I can picture how distracting it would be to sit across from her in a meeting. Although, let’s face it, sometimes meetings really do need distractions… for serious.

Does she pull it off? I mean, really long hair sometimes looks awful. And older women in long hair isn’t always the best either. But sometimes you see both and it’s just right. Is this the case?
Hmm… I so cannot relate. =(
Huh, I never really thought of that, the fact people often see the same commuters over and over again. In some way I think that’s pretty cool! I would probably eventually make friends.
ahh, the DC metro. Never a dull moment.
If you did have that kind of hair, think of the benefits- your fiance would never have to worry about the elevator of your sky rise breaking down. He could just climb your tresses.
She might work in an office, but on the IT side- it can be pretty lax. I seen a guy with hair probably as long as the woman you described.
I have very long hair. In the warmer months, I keep it pinned up to keep cool, but in the cooler months, I let it down and I do tend to play with it. Braid and rebraid, wrap it round my neck or fingers, use it as a scarf. Sometimes I just run my fingers through it to unknot it. It’s naturally curly, so it knots very easily. My hair is one of my few physical vanities. I even make my own shampoo because I’m allergic to an ingredient in the mass produced ones which makes my hair fall out and blister’s my scalp. I think long hair is a sensory thing, not so much visual as tactile. If you have long hair, you can’t help but play with it. One of my fondest memories as a child is of my great grandmother stroking my hair. Considering this is a grandmother who was singularly unaffectionate as I grew older, I supposed it strengthens my attachment to my hair even more.
Ha ha ha. Long hair is kind of a built in toy. Sometimes people around a long haired one get annoyed by it and complain about having it flying in their way so folks with it tend to pull it around them or that reason. We have several long haired gals in our family including me.
I find knuckle cracking more distracting and then their are twitching and scratching and snorting. Oh there is no end to the distracting behaviours of others. When I was a student I always had a tough time getting used to professor’s little behavoural quirks and getting beyond them so I could listen to their words and learn the material.
Now I just notice and laugh inwardly when I see the quirks of those around me!
Interesting blog.
Humans are champion of habit… though there are those who challenge the order… like my brother in law… but we loves him.
Your town is so much the opposite from mine. In Cape Town nobody seems to be on any schedule and the day just happens by change. Proper public transport is almost non-existent inside the town itself. When a good summer day break many will knock off early and go to the beach.
It’s funny, but I usually see the same older woman driving a lime green VW who keeps fresh flowers in the vase. I like looking at her flowers. She probably thinks I’m a nutty stalker…
Speaking of making work more entertaining… I’m a Slate.com addict, and this will make it obvious. They have posted a video on office members of the XX site (a partner news web site that’s all female) trying to drink during the workday like they do in Mad Men. I think it was posted today or yesterday. Very funny experiment though. Wish I could do it.

Also the video “The NFL Hits the Oregon Trail” above it is quite amusing. Even for a barely-there football fan like me.
Many years ago, we were watching McEnroe and some one else ( don’t remember the other guy. Isn’t that just pathetic?) at a tournament, and there was this young chick in front of us, with long hair, who was constantly, I mean every two seconds, bringing her hair from one side to the other and jerking her head, or combing it with her fingers and shaking her head to get attention. It was irritating to all of us. So finally one of the guys in our group reached over to her and asked if she needed a ribbon to tie her hair up. She quit doing that annoying routine after that.
Can you imagine her shower drain? ew
Seems like the hair would get in the way, like long nails do.
lol i would hate to have hair that long but i do like my long hair *When i had it*
long hair like that is a WONDERFUL distraction from meetings especially when its boring x.x
@i_was_there_and_back_again - Meh, it’s kind of dishwater blonde color and it doesn’t look like she does much to style it. It doesn’t work for her too well.
@Roadlesstaken - Hah, you would be breaking the rules of Metro. No one talks to each other!
@ch10n9 - Truly
@SoullFire - I guess at one time in college, I did have really long hair too. I just don’t think I played with it. You could be totally right about the IT thing too. I used to work with a lot of our IT people and they were definitely more lax about wardrobe.
@harmony0stars - Now the attachment I understand. I chopped off 16 inches of my hair for Locks of Love a few years ago. I almost cried when my hairdresser cut it even though hair grows back and I was doing a nice thing by donating my hair.
@sir_spamalot - Habit is definitely a very human trait.
@endlesssummer128 - I kind of wonder if the people that always see see me too or if they’re totally oblivious to the fact that we ride together each day.
@FillTheSpace - LOL, I wish I could do that too… it would be so frowned upon
@ZSA_MD - Good for him for saying something!
@ItsWhatEyeKnow - Ick! I can’t imagine! So gross!
@BigToePeople - So true!
@VampiressMai - Indeed
