NYC Subways
I’m a public transportation junkie. I love it. I’m totally fascinated by the prospect of moving an entire city of people from one place to another without use of a car. When we were in Rome, I begged the Architect to let us go on the subway even though it really doesn’t go anywhere (he obliged because he luffs me, haha).
In my previous trips to NYC with my family, we’ve taken cabs everywhere. My parents were sort of freaked out by the subway and admittedly the subway can be a little confusing but it’s so convenient. One thing I noticed about the Subway as opposed to our Metro is that it’s quite a bit dirtier and for a germaphobe like me, that isn’t all that exciting. I washed my hands a lot on this trip and did a lot of touching with my sleeves rather than hands.
One of the things that I loved about the Subway is that the stations have way more character than the DC Metro stations. All Metro stations look similar. They have cavernous ceilings and the only decorations are the various signs. I love all the art in the Subway:
These are actually mosaics! Too cool!Another thing that I love about all public transportation in general is just the sights you see. There’s always someone interesting no matter which system you’re riding. You never know who you’re going to see.

Purple house. Of course! My kids were in awe when some break dancing broke out on our subway. And I realized why everyone in NYC wears black when I got home with my white winter jacket, turned black-ish from all the city soot and rubbing on things in the subway. Ick.
I don’t really like crowds so I can’t say that I like public transportation. I see it’s uses don’t get me wrong but if I lived in the city I would try to find other ways of getting around like walking (and hope all my things would be near one another).
Oh cool shots of the subway.
The subway system in NYC is a work of art unto itself!
@turningreen - I rode the subway with my hands in my sleeves. The Architect thought it was hilarious but I didn’t want my hands to get gross!
@NightlyDreams - I don’t like crowds that much either but I’ve learned to calm myself down on public transportation when it’s crowded.
@tymedancer - Thank you!
@christao408 - I love how unique all the stations are. I really wish that the Metro in DC would allow more art into the stations. I just think that it would make the commute a little more pleasant!
Neat shots! I’ve never done the subway in NYC. I have taken a train from Union Station to Connecticut, but that’s different. I tend to walk or cab it while there. I’d love to go with a native and take the subway.
