The Freedom Tower and WTC Site (More NYC Pics)
The second place that we walked to when we we were in NYC was the World Trade Center and Freedom Tower site. I had been to NYC a few times since 9/11 but had never been down to the site. Being in the DC area during 9/11, I’m still pretty traumatized by even thinking about 9/11 and wasn’t all that anxious to go to the site. I drive by the side of the Pentagon that was hit on 9/11 quite often and that frankly still freaks me out.
The Architect’s company is doing some projects in that area so we decided to walk down to see some of the construction.
I found a cute little friend along the way. There is so much symbolism going into the Freedom Tower. Where once lay destruction, rises something that will be a testament to the idea of the American spirit. Construction is going 24-7 at this point. The building is going to be finished fairly soon. Next will be the memorial, which will be even more stunning. The construction site is way busy. There’s tons of people and machinery. It’s a really amazing show of force.
This is the Freedom Tower. It’s only about halfway built now!
A closer view. They’re beginning to put curtain wall up.
A picture of what the site looked like before construction. You can see the footprints of the WTC towers.
This is what the Freedom Tower is going to look like when it’s finished. It’ll truly be a stunning building.

lol nice @ the last pic
Love these photos and TY for sharing them with us.
Glad you shared these pictures. We lost several friends in the WTC on 9/11. I haven’t been there since, but it’s nice to know that there will be a new building to grace the skyline of lower Manhattan in honor of those who perished.
I visited nyc in 98. I would be freaked out for a long time as well. I think it’s natural after something so traumatic and you were nearer it than I.
The design is beautiful. I think a park would have been more fitting a place. But I know property is money there.
That will be a stunning building when it’s finished! Thanks fr posting.
it is strange seeing it..I haven’t been to NYC since 07…I am not sure if you knew worked at the tower site about a month after 9/11 as a grief counselor….there was nothing there except piles…..i don’t talk about it much..it was overwhelming to be there…
I’m sure it’s going to be a stunning building when completed, but I’m not sure I’d want an office in it…..
I really like the design of the building!
@tjordanm - He’s a good husband that doesn’t mind doing silly poses if it makes me smile
@tymedancer - @endlesssummer128 - Glad you enjoyed!
@turningreen - I didn’t get any pictures of what the memorial park and museum about 9/11 is going to look like but it’s going to be absolutely stunning and most definitely a fitting tribute to all those who perished. You can probably find some of the plans online if you’ve not seen them before.
@NightlyDreams - They are building a park and a museum right next to the building. It’s going to be stunning!
@portiajules - Oh wow! I didn’t know that. I can only imagine how almost surreal that might have been being there. I know that for awhile after 9/11 in DC, I was kind of too creeped out to go into the city or to go by the Pentagon in VA, just across the Potomac from DC.
@i_was_there_and_back_again - Eh, I’m not a big fan of really tall buildings. I don’t like being able to feel them sway!!!
@BigToePeople - It’s going to be gorgeous. I can only imagine how awesome it’s going to be when it’s all finished and lit up at night. Stunning!
Dear Meg.
It’s been almost 10 years since the tragedy of 9/11. I had heard about the Freedom Tower, but I didn’t realize it was this far along. Maybe I’ll take an east coast trip when it’s finished. (I still need to see D.C. too.) Last time I took a trip to the east, I stayed in a B&B on Nantucket Island for two weeks. I didn’t even go to Mass proper, and I’ve never been there. There was so much to do on island that I couldn’t find the time.
Some day I’ll travel. I’m starting to get the realization that I’m going to be retiring in less than a decade. That’s pretty exciting, if I can afford to live without a job, that is.
Great photos.
