  • Lifelong Learner

    Recently, I’m sure that many of us have been bombarded by commercials and such that herald the coming of the school year. I’m still receiving emails from the likes of Amazon and Half.com trying to remind me that I might just need a couple hundred dollar textbooks. You can’t escape it. These things have made me a little nostalgic as for the first time in over 20 years, I will not be one of the ones going back to school in the fall. I feel like I should be figuring out a class schedule or ordering books.

    It’s kind of a weird feeling…

    School has almost always been a big part of my life for such a long time. I liked it and always found it pretty manageable in general.  While I don’t foresee any more degrees in my <near> future (hey, another Masters is always possible), there’s definitely a few classes that I wouldn’t mind taking for fun. I’m currently reading a book about a group of people taking Italian lessons. That sounds like fun to me. I also would love to take cooking classes, perhaps in some sort of foreign cuisine (Italian or Indian would be a blast). Jewelry making would also be a lot of fun.

    The nice thing about living in this area is that the general populace seems to be interested in one way or another in education. There are tons and tons of places to take various classes either through schools or private companies. Basically any subject that you could care to learn about, there is probably a class for it.

    I can definitely see myself being one of those people who is always in some class or another. I love learning with a passion. I just can’t see giving up some sort of formal schooling even if I’m not working towards a degree.

    If you could take any class, what would you take? Why?

  • I’d probably take voice lessons if they weren’t so expensive. Also, I’m enjoying choir and learning so much from that now that I might actually OD on it if I took classes as well. Maybe when I have my own land I’ll be interested in gardening classes, though, again, I’m learning a lot from people I know. Eventually I’m thinking about doing electrician training or maybe learning massage. Or German. Or physics.

  • I like to see how you are thirsty of knowledges . This is good, so much it is true there is no end to learning.
     But you have certainley noticed we learn much and more deeply when we have to teach . This needs less compiled but better organized  knowledges .
     When I was retiree I took English course !

    Love

  • I would probably wanna take more skill classes that can be use in everyday life, such as cooking class or something.

  • I’d like to take an improv class.  I think it would be fun to do.

  • It’s really good to be self-motivated when it comes to learning; if you know you can benefit by taking a few extra classes about something you’re interested in, I say why not?

  • I am going to take Mandarin in a month at a local junior college to brush up for upcoming career tests!

  • I am just finishing up an economics class (tonight is actually the final).  It was a really easy class for me, but I LOVED it.  I really learned a lot.  I dont need to take another class for any sort of requirements.  I am seriously considering auditing a microeconomics class.  I think it is a subject everyone could use more knowledge in.

    The day I stop learning new things will be the day I die!

  • For me it would be learning to read music and play a keyboard, maybe photography too !

  • I want to take a class in something unique, something that’s just completely out of the ordinary. I love things that are completely out there and learning about  it..

  • I would want to take English and literature classes to expand my limited vocabulary.  Then again, I can do that myself by reading verbose books/articles and slowly assimilating new words into daily speech.  But then again, nobody would understand me.

  • history, biology, art, the list goes on and on – because it would be fun!  when i get old enough, i’m going to take free college classes for no credit – and i’ll even take the tests (i like screwing up the curve)

  • One thing I miss about being in the US is the ready availability of ongoing learning through junior colleges and adult education courses.  While still living in SF I took a couple of years of French just as a hobby.  Would love to get back to it as my French has suffered at the expense of Thai.  I would also like to take some math classes and science, and see if I can go back and finally understand things that were very complicated for me in school.

  • I would love to learn photography, or play a musical instrument.

  • I will go to college to study Asian studies and specialize in Taiwan studies. This is because I am a Chinese living in Hong Kong and I strive for democracy which Hong Kong still does not have. Taiwan is the only full-fledged democracy on Chinese soil. I want to study Taiwan’s experience of becoming a democracy.

  • Photograph so I could learn to use different photo editing programs so I can do those things that others know how to do that I can’t figure out.

  • Photography classes.

  • I’d take Violin or Piano lessons.

  • I’d take self-defense for the obvious reason.  Boxing too…. Release some pent up agression would feel real good :)

    BTW – I love the album you were listening to.

  • I’d love to take a class in stained glass art.  Or pottery, something creative.

  • Hardware – the non computer kind – and building materials. As long as it was actually informative and not just something that goes through the motions requiring you take other classes just so they get the tuition

  • I am not sure.  I am taking a photography class at the local senior center and think it is really important to continue to learn to keep our minds active and alert.

  • @BoureeMusique - Massage would be excellent.

    @fauquet - Yes, there should never be an end to learning!

    @Roadlesstaken - I would pretty much take any kind of cooking class. I’m a good cook but I could use some refining. I would love taking a knife class. I’m horrible about choosing appropriate knives for food prep.

    @Rob_of_the_Sky - That would be so fun! I used to be big into theatre when I was in middle and high school and always loved improv.

    @ElusiveSoul - Indeed :)

  • @Shades_of_Athena - I love how many classes all of the junior colleges around us offer. It’s awesome!

    @der_lila_Stern - Economics was one of my favorite classes in college. So interesting!

    @Chatamanda - I used to take piano lessons. I would love to do it again!

    @CPKviperphoenix - I’d love to take some classes on some off the beaten path history.

    @stupid_systemus - Some might :)

  • @travelerblue - I would totally take the tests as well. I don’t really get test anxiety so why not?

    @christao408 - I don’t really have that much interest in math so I don’t think any of those classes would be high on my list!

    @icapillas - @grannyinboxers - @ItsWhatEyeKnow - I would absolutely love to take photography classes. My fiance is a brilliant photographer and he’s slowly teaching me some photography, which is very cool.

    @choyshinglin - It’s so important to understand one’s surroundings!

    @my_little_niche - I would love to take piano lessons again!

    @cake77 - I took jiujitsu (sp?) when I was younger and loved it!

    @endlesssummer128 - Any of those would be awesome!

    @blazintommyd - I think a building materials, specifically wood would be really cool. My fiance does some woodworking and before I met him, I didn’t realize how many different characteristics each different type of wood had. It’s actually very interesting to me.

  • I think I would like to take brush up/take some more foreign language classes and I would like to take some cooking courses as well!
