No More Coordination
The whole hand-eye coordination thing kind of escapes me when it came to sports. I’m sort of clumsy in the magical tripping over nothing way anyhow which most definitely does not help. Sports involving balls that you actually have to hit were just not any good.
Growing up, I tried out a bunch of different sports. I love soccer and swimming. My parents signed me up for t-ball with the intention that I would eventually be able to move up to softball. This did not end well. Most of the time, I simply knocked over the t (I can’t remember if you got out for that or got a walk in t-ball). Softball was not for me.
Middle and high school gym classes were always a joy. For whatever reason, I had a gym teacher (the same one in both middle and high school as she moved up to high school the year that I started) who was OBSESSED with making us play tennis. Tennis was really rough. I spent more time chasing the ball than anything else. I had countless numbers of people try to show me how to hit the ball but it just never quite worked out as much as I tried, which made me incredibly sad as one of my big crushes during my freshman year was a sexy Russian senior who played tennis. It just was not meant to be.
This week, the Architect got me to go play racquetball with him. We have an indoor court right here at our apartment complex. I dually warned him that it was probably going to be a lot more chasing the ball than actual playing but being the good fiancé that he is, he promised that he would be patient with me. And he was. And racquetball ended up not being as painful as I thought it would be. It took me awhile to get a grip on how I needed to play but I actually had a lot of fun. I think we’re going to try and make this a regular thing since it’s fun and great exercise.
Afterwards, there happened to be a Christmas party that the leasing company was holding for residents in the room right next to the racquetball court. And each time one of the people from the leasing office would pass us, they kept telling us to stop in after the game. I’m not sure if the company advertised or not but almost no one showed up. They had lots of snacks and a raffle drawing as well. Everyone except for one person won a pretty nice prize. The General Manager of the complex felt bad for the one person and gave them $25 off their rent for the month (not too shabby). The Architect and I each won a $25 gift certificate to a local pizza chain. Needless to say, we’re eating pizza tonight!
In other news, we’re supposed to get 8-10 inches of snow. The DMV area does not know what to do with snow meaning that I’m going to be spending a lot of time at home inside. Fine by me, I guess but I did have two lunches planned this weekend (On Saturday with the Mamallama and On Sunday with a friend). Maybe I’ll still be okay to go to lunch?
So were you gifted with hand-eye coordination?

A bit. I’m not too good at ball sports but I do quite okay. Enjoy the pizza.
The only sport I was ever half decent at was lacrosse. And within my first two years of playing, I started to play goal. They always needed a goal tender, so that ended up being my position all through high school. I always loved playing. I started up again last year in a league. It was ok. I did learn that the games without practices really arent very fun! Part of what made the whole thing fun was knowing your teammates and working as a team. Not so much when you dont know the other girls and there are no practices!
I am trying very hard to figure out something that I enjoy, is inexpensive, and I can do regularly that is good exercise!
I hope you continue to play and get better! And that is awesome about the Christmas party. (Well, that you got stuff, not so much that hardly anyone showed up.
NO! Lol. I am the clumsiest, most uncoordinated person in the world. I tried a lot of different sports/activities – the only one I was any good at was swimming.
Seriously, I’m the kind of person who falls up the stairs, rolls out of bed, trips over nothing, spills food on my shirt. No hand-eye (or foot-eye!) coordination in my genes, apparently! My brother AND my sister seem to have gotten a fair share, though…*jealous*
If I didn’t have hand-eye coordination I would not be able to play tennis at all. That sport is hard!
I hope you do not get snowed in too bad, and you can still keep your lunches.
Sometimes I wonder if, when you come back to something as an adult, you can surprise yourself by being better at it than you remembered. I haven’t played tennis since high school but used to really enjoy it, although was awful. There are some courts nearby. Maybe I should try it again.
@eve1684 - We did. The pizza was tasty
@der_lila_Stern - Ooo, I don’t think that I would do too well with lacrosse. I can’t imagine trying to catch the ball! I’m really hopeful that we’ll get more into racquetball. It’s a lot more interesting than going to the gym (we have access to a small one in our complex as well). Walking can be fun if you have a pretty place to walk around… maybe just not in this cold weather!
@whitetrashpoet - We must have been separated at birth. I do all of that stuff as well. I kept hoping that I would eventually grow out of it but unfortunately I’m 24 and it hasn’t happened yet!!!
@Roadlesstaken - I bow down to your skills!
@o_Dirty_Blonde_o - It’s not looking too good. They’re calling for a lot of snow overnight!
@christao408 - I wonder that too. Seeing the outcome of my racquetball game, I have my suspicions that may be true!
I have no hand-eye coordination. I used to be in little league t-ball where there was pitching before hitting the ball off of the tee, so that you could hit the ball as it was pitched to you, and if you kept getting strikes you’d eventually get a chance to hit the ball off of the tee. I did this little league for two years and was able to hit the ball before resorting to the tee exactly one time in all that time. Though I have found a good sport that requires little hand-eye coordination:bowling.
I am so glad you played Racquet ball. It is such a great way of exercising your muscles. Keep it up Meg. You will be happy you did.
@TheCheshireGrins - I wish there was a good place to walk that I didnt have to drive to. It is snowing and there is already a good layer of snow on the ground. That makes the cold not even matter!
Very, there were only three little things that kept me from playing major college ball
speed, size and talent
Would love to have your snow! We only have 7″ on the ground and it’s not quite enough for snowshoes. They require eye/foot coordination only when crossing fallen logs.
@Rob_of_the_Sky - Bowling is fun but I haven’t done it for a really long time. It’s been at least two years.
@ZSA_MD - Indeed!
@der_lila_Stern - Yup, we’re contending with about two feet of snow today! Can’t walk in that!
@ElevenStones - I’ll send the snow your way
