OMG Boobs!
This morning, the Architect and I drove into work together. We usually listen to a morning show on the local rock station. It can be a little raunchy sometimes but they talk about some pretty interesting topics. This morning the topic d’ jour was one that really got me steaming mad. They were talking about how one of the local news stations did a story about getting breast exams to check for breast cancer and they showed a young woman getting a full breast exam and you saw everything, nipples and all. I saw this report last night and wasn’t offended at all. I have boobs and I rather like my boobs and understand the importance of performing self-exams on my boobs every month so in case something goes awry, I can try to catch it early. I thought it was really wonderful that the news showed a full breast exam because I’m sure that there are a lot of people out there who either don’t know how to do a good breast exam or don’t do it every month so I saw it as a good reminder for everyone.
I also thought that it was rather brave of the young woman in the story who got the breast exam done. She was in her late 20s and detected breast cancer through a self-exam and felt that it was important for other people to know about getting regular breast exams. While I don’t see breasts as being dirty or shameful or anything like that, I think it would take a lot of guts to show your boobs on tv for the whole DMV area to see even if it was for a good purpose like this.
What made me mad this morning is that the radio show host was essentially making fun of the woman’s breasts this morning. She was only an A cup and had an inverted nipple and he said that took away from what the news program was trying to show because her boobs were small and he thought they looked weird. He thought that it would be better to show someone with bigger breasts. I thought that it was a pretty ridiculous conjecture. Some people have small breasts, some have big one. Nipples can be inverted or not inverted. All breasts are different but all need to be checked every month for lumps regardless of their look or size.
The news show was not meant to be a sexual show. Anyone who thought that is pretty dumb. Breast cancer is serious business. The person showing her breasts on tv was doing it for a good purpose and it shouldn’t matter what her boobs look like. She’s going through treatment now for her breast cancer and felt it was important for other people to know how to do self-exams.
What do you think about this?

Any boob is a good boob.
He is an ass, that is why boobs are seen the way they are, because people like him get stupid about it instead of seeing them as part of the body they see them as separate entities for their own personal stimulation.
The radio guys obviously thought they were being funny, but it wasn’t. To mock that woman’s breasts when she was brave enough to share her story is in very poor taste and quite rude. I hope people complain to the station about it.
That said, one of our local stations has a ‘Friends for Life’ program. The 13th of every month they remind you to remind a friend to do their self exam. They’ve done many stories about breast cancer and the importance of mammograms, but they’ve never shown ‘everything’. I do wonder why your news station thought it was neccessary to show everything…they could have blurred out the nipples.
These morning show jokers have to come up with something stupid every day. I imagine the subtext in the mind of whomever was doing the shtick was basically something like, “Hey listen to how stupid I am. It’s a news piece about breast exams and all I can think of is…” etc. The self-denigration is often assumed. But it sounds like they did a poor job of getting that humor across to you. Perhaps they should have given the idea a second look before going with it. Not surprising – drive time rock radio can get pretty sloppy.
Radio shock jocks just have to get in their twisted takes or the ratings would fall. Like you I’d be offended. Men especially can be jerks when they try to push the limit.
That radio host should be fired for lack of common sense and etiquette!!!
Im honestly surprised the news showed everything – although I do think it is important. (Isnt inverted nipples usually a sign of a problem?)
I think that’s pretty immature of those hosts.
Men are sexually repressed for various reasons mostly their own and try to impose the same thing on women, consequently it’s awkward for them to express themselves, in this case they equate nudity with sex – not unusual – Under NYS law for instance topless sunbathing is legal unless it’s outlawed for both sexes here’s the case

Three women in protest of Patriarchy essentially went to a park, nonchalantly took their tops off and enjoyed the sun. They were arrested and the case went all the way to the State’s highest court. Ironically the concurrence by Titone (they’ll like that one too) contains the most information – you shall enjoy reading it
I agree with you completely – And can’t resist saying that I imagine that your boobs are indeed quite Lovely
♥♥
It sounds like typical shock jock “let’s tap into the mind/maturity of a junior HS kid” and come up with some crude humor. And as usual, they decided to make fun of a topic they should have more respect for, and should be reprimanded for it.
That is pretty lame… boobs are wonderful in any size. :D
I’m a little surprised that the news would show everything, but there’s definitely worst things they can show than a regular old breast exam.
Dear Meg,
My advice. Don’t listen to radio show hosts. Especially ones that get you steamed. I was just reading in the L.A. Times this morning about how certain news programs are essentially opinion shows. (The article was about Fox Cable) I don’t watch TV news for the reason that the selection process is flawed, and I can get direct AP and Reuters news feeds to my computer. Sometimes even the Times is biased, but usually in the right direction. They’ve gotten Pulitzers because they point out the flaws in the system pretty well. The aren’t a partisan paper, inasmuch as everyone in L.A. is thought to be a die hard liberal anyway. In any case, my point is that more opinion than ever is being propagated by the media instead of ethical and honest journalism. The opinionated and hate filled blogosphere seems to be bleeding into the media.
Sometimes the radio show hosts are downright mean anyway, and this guy seems like no exception.
There was a tempest in a teapot here on Xanga regarding the site which asked Xangan women to “send in photos of their boobs” in order to help fight breast cancer during awareness month. It might seem titillating when posed in this manner, but an actual breast examination shouldn’t be derided, nor should it be laughed at. I agree that the young woman in question is a brave soul, and I hope the examination demonstration helps more people.
And to heck with the radio show host.

>:O stupid radio person. i wonder what he would say if i made fun of his dick the exact same way!
@LilyTheBunny - actually that was my 1st thought most of them are quite beautiful but every now and then >:p
If I had heard that, I would have thought, “Immature jerks” and changed stations. But then, I can’t stand morning jocks like that anyway.
The radio show host is a jerk no doubt. His brain is in his balls and he probably thinks with his genitals.
Wow, that was really brave of the girl to have a breast exam on TV. Good for her. Good reason, too. I’m a teensy bit shocked that regular network TV would allow full boob shots, despite the good reason for it. The radio show was 100% inappropriate to comment on how her boobs looked. What an ass…every woman is different, and to call someone’s breasts weird is just wrong. That’s not humor and not entertainment. Someone ought to teach him a lesson.
@Da__Vinci - Agreed!
@WakeUpLaughing - @BigToePeople - @Roadlesstaken - Eh, I don’t know. I don’t see boobs in the context of breast exams being dirty or sexual but the news station may have kind of been inviting this kind of chatter by not blurring things out although arguably some of the things you have to do during a self-exam can’t be blurred out in order for one to see what you have to do.
@seedsower - @dirtbubble - @AnamcharaConcepts - @icapillas - @AlterEgo909 - @SoullFire - @baldmike2004 - @LilyTheBunny - @blazintommyd - @bananaleaf_soapbox - @ZSA_MD - Yeah, this particular dj has gotten in trouble before for saying crude things. At one time he got suspended for a week or so. This was a few years ago and I don’t remember exactly what he said that got him suspended. Nothing happened to him this time though…
@der_lila_Stern - That was one of the things that was said in the newscast. I actually learned something; I didn’t know that an inverted nipple was a problem.
I was suspended and banished from a State University College radio station and sued the University for violation of the 1st A. US Const. There is a heavy effort by Conservatives to expand censorship, but the State University is a corporate person acting under color of law, owns the facility, holds the FCC broadcast license for the facility and is expressly responsible for broadcast policy for such facility; and as a corporate person is therefore subject to suit under 42 USC 1983 – Andy Cuomo NYS AG says that SUNY Binghamton is absolutely immune from any and all suits under the US Const 11th A. and may therefore violate free speech whenever it desires – States Rights. NYS has waived ‘sovereign immunity’ – viz., if you sue the State in the NYS Court of Claims under pre condition the entity is served with a Notice of Claim, but the NYS high court will not allow persons to bring US Constitutional tort actions at the NYS Court of Claims (see US Const Art IV, clause 2). The NDNY District Judge Thomas McAvoy agrees with Cuomo but on different grounds but does claim that Ex Parte Young relief cannot be brought against a corporate board only against an individual officer of the State (I disagree on both counts but they are alternative grounds as I don’t believe the University is immune as such) but the District Judge McAvoy went even further and ruled sua sponte (on his own motion) that the violation of free speech and my banishment from a public broadcasting facility owned by a State University is private action and therefore no case as this may ever be brought in a Federal court, case dismissed. Bell Atlantic v Twombly purported allows him to do this (Google it) prior to that decision my complaint would have been sufficient enough to entitle me to summary judgment which could not issue because the sua sponte ground that the free speech violatin is not action under color of law is an issue of fact which the Judge himself raised and not an issue of pleading. My appeal brief is due November 23rd at the US Court of Appeals for the 2d Circuit. Encouraging censorship is a bad idea. I agree with Michael – there are now (unlike the time of FCC v Pacifica) a zillion stations to choose from – just turn the dial. BTW the charge against me was that I aired a sound recording at 4am that contained the phrase “you’re not worth shitting on”. There is no media source anywhere in the US of A that will report this story. Try it. No one will report it but the case is real “Dyno v SUNY Binghamton, et al” 09-3010 US Court of Appeals for the 2d Circuit. This is Fascist Despotism and it’s being covered up. Richard M. Nixon would have been proud. Anyone remember the Pentagon Papers? Time have changed and not for the better
@TheCheshireGrins - perhaps that is why they showed the inverted nipple - so that you would recognize it if it happened to you.
I’ll say this- it’s not like they got some buxom blond to demonstrate, they took a cancer survivor who wanted to spread the message and it was done tastefully.
I certainly did not hear the piece, but some humor can have a small place even in such a story as this one so long as the impetus is not to hurt someone. It could be used to help diffuse the initial exposure of the breast to lay the ground work for the serious discussion of a life and death issue. Too many in the media/entertainment arena have little regard for others. Notice how Letterman and Mahr enjoys hurting people like Palin over and over. Actually, for the weak minded it is more of a defense mechanism that a skill set. As Dave has learned, Karma can even find someone who is “so above it all”. And yet Palin has never said one word about Dave since his fall from what grace he possessed. Geez, I sound so old. But….the “OMG Boobs” tag still got my attention! –BTB
Boobs (any size)….gotta luv em!
