Overheard in Red Lobster
The Architect and I seem to have a most unfortunate (or fortunate for entertaining blog writing purposes) run of sitting by the most interesting people in restaurants. Tonight we decided to go to Red Lobster and were seated in a booth near the bar area. We went at about 5:30 so I could get back with enough time to do some more homework.
There was a guy at the bar that was pretty drunk. He was doing the ol’ “bob and weave” sitting in the bar stool. He gets on the phone and starts shouting to whoever he was calling. Here’s an approximation of his side of the conversation (all in yelling):
-”Hey man, you want to hang out? I’m at the Red Lobster and you live on Connecticut Ave by where Mike used to live.”
-”Oh you don’t know Mike? He’s this guy…”
-”So do you want to hang out?”
-”Well me, you and your lady could hang out and there would be no trouble. This lady wanted to date me and I said no so yeah.”After awhile and a lot of giggles from the table next to us, the drunk guy hangs up. He calls the bartender over and pays his tab. He goes outside and I’m hoping that I’m not going to have to watch this very drunk guy get into a car and try to drive… Eek
Do any of you know bartenders can do anything about drunk people going out and getting in their cars???After about 10 minutes, he comes back in and sits back down at the bar. Luckily the bartender seems to have grown some sense in the past 10 minutes since the guy went outside and tells him that he has to cut the guy off. The guy says okay and asks if the bartender will call a cab and then proceeds to start asking the bartender about every single thing at the bar (what is that bottle? what is that machine? etc…) He then gets up and goes back outside and starts walking down the road (at least he wasn’t driving).
He made for a very interesting dinner anyhow.
Of note: This morning at 6:30 we were woken up by a really horrible noise. We jumped out of bed and realized that it was the fire alarm (a little scary considering that we live in an apartment building). We gathered up the kitties and went outside. I was just in pjs and forgot to put on shoes. When we got outside, there was no smoke. We ended up being outside for about 20 minutes before the fire department showed up (again, very scary). It was just a false alarm luckily but I kind of wish that it had happened when we weren’t trying to sleep

How was your weekend?

I’ll say this much, it was a lot lower-key than yours! We had a large party on Saturday night, about 15 guests which is a bit much for our space. It was a game night – Monopoly, Uno, Aggravation – and I had a lot of fun. Tawn was a bit overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of people invading his space and the fact that the last group of them didn’t leave until 1:30. While it was fun, I don’t think we’ll be doing that again anytime soon.
ah, well at least he sounded like a friendly drunk, not an angry one.
I love that CD you are listening ….even better than all the nuts you overhear!
My friend called me last night to ask if I wanted to go out with her and her husband, I said I’d be open to it and she told me to call her when I was available.
So I give her a call later on and she said she, “just got a new bed and wanted to try it out.”
At least I got the hint.
Haven’t been to Red Lobster in years! At least the guy was a fun drunk and not an aggressive/violent drunk.
Saturday: Got up and met up with my friend and his wife and did a photo walk in Old Town Alexandria.
Today: Went with the parents to Cheesecake Factory for Lunch, then went and played Golf with Dad this afternoon.
(Sorry to hear about the false fire alarm…)
Way goofy. Can’t get into it.
what’s graduate school like? i know it’s definitely more difficult than obtaining a bachelor’s degree, but to what extent?
You always manage to get seats near the “entertainment”
At least this time it was more amusing as opposed to the little bratty boy who misbehaved like it was going out of style.
@christao408 - Sounds like a lot of people but that’s nice to do every once in awhile.
@Roadlesstaken - Yes, friendly is good.
@seedsower - I love Alison Krauss. She is so awesome!
@Dmbosstone - Getting hints is a good skill
@Redshirte - Ooo, I love Old Town. It’s so pretty down there.
@dirtbubble - Yup, twas pretty goofy.
@lollarious - This may be a little bit of a weird answer but it’s both easier and harder. You do have more work, which makes it harder. On the other hand, its easier because typically when you go to grad school, you are studying something that you are really into. In undergrad, some of the hardest classes for me were the general education classes that we were forced to take in order to graduate. While the subject matter wasn’t really hard, sitting down and trying to focus on these classes that I had no real interest in made it very difficult. In grad school, you are focusing on the subject matter that you want to study. Learning always seems to be easier when you are interested in the subject matter.
@SoullFire - The entertainment is drawn to me, I swear
Your weekend sounds eventful and bloggable! Mine was very productive. Oh, and I watched two chick movies…He’sJust Not That Into You which I really liked and thought had depth but it wasn’t really comedic as much as dramatic. And Bride Wars which was really weak.
@BigToePeople - I haven’t seen either of those. I want to! The Architect isn’t too keen on watching many romantic comedies. A weekend or so ago, we watched “Fever Pitch” so I think we’ve filled our RomCom quota for the month lol.
@TheCheshireGrins - I’m not familiar with Fever Pitch. Was it any good?
@BigToePeople - I love it. It came out a few years ago. It’s about a guy with a crazy Red Sox obsession and his girlfriend who has to deal with said obsession. It’s cute! It has Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore in it.
@TheCheshireGrins - OH I meant to see it. I’ll have to keep my eye out for it now.
I overheard a conversation yesterday. While I was walking into PetSmart, a 20-something guy was yelling and swearing into his cell phone. About every other word was the “F” word. A lady was with him (I think his mother), and she kept telling him to keep it down. She was clearly embarrassed.
Other than that, it was just a typical weekend of spending time with my hubby and our dogs.
heh, I think if drunk people knew how amusing they were to the rest of us, the mortification alone would help them to stop drinking.
Can’t say my weekend was all that exciting… but I’ve had some real whacked out experiences with my brother-in-law…. he’s the bigger drinker out of the two of us.
Nothing very exciting over the weekend for me. I think yours was better!
Thank goodness it was a false alarm when the fire alarm went off. I live in an apt. too and the thought of a fire scares me as I do not think I could get all of my fur critters out.
@LadyShades - I would not have liked to be that lady either!
@harmony0stars - Truly!
@stixandstonz - The lucky thing was that our cats were hungry because we hadn’t fed them yet so they wanted to stay right close to us. If they would have ran and hid, we may not have been able to take them out with us. Luckily the noise didn’t seem to faze them too much!
