  • Nut Allergy

Yesterday, I walked into our break room and saw an interesting note on the office coffeepot that read

“Hazelnut coffee. Nut allergies? Don’t drink!”

I had a little giggle because I’m not sure who would forget that hazelNUT coffee does indeed have nuts in it. The note was just oddly specific. I found myself wondering if there had been a previous horrible incident in which nut allergies were involved. I can understand why one would put a sign stating what kind of coffee it was on the coffeepot, I suppose. Nut allergies can be serious business but it still seems like a little bit of overkill to point out that people with nut allergies should not be drinking coffee made out of nuts (although I know from personal experience that allergies to bad coffee can be just as devastating, haha). Okay, Captain Obvious!

This sign made me think a little bit about the lengths we go to protect each other in general. Are we really protecting or are we just hindering the growth of others’ common sense? Can someone grow common sense? In some cases, the protection is warranted and in other cases, one would think that we wouldn’t need to be protected from ourselves. Although there are still people suing for getting too hot tea and coffee at Starbucks and for making themselves fat at McDonalds. Is it necessary to tell someone that their tea is super hot or that those French fries are going to end up as saddle bags on one’s person? Is it not apparent? If you can’t see these things for yourself, do you really need to be told or should we simply allow Darwin’s theory prevail?

  • survival of the fittest ftw! ;D

ahahahahaha. nah, it’s about protecting ourselves. People are so quick to sue, one to make a quick buck and one because they feel stupid for being stupid.

so…caution your fresh made coffee is effing hot.

caution this hazelnut coffee has nuts (giggle giggle) so if you’re allergic to nuts (snicker..ha) don’t drink.

if you need to be warned about that kind of stuff you should be weeded out. ;) hahaha. ah…I’m kinda serious…terrible terrible….cuz I’m totally serious…ha!

  • I say let Darwin rule!

  • sometimes I think that the majority of people on earth have no common sense…

  • Products made near peanuts have to carry this warning. Strangely people allergic to peanuts are not allergic to peanut oil.

A lot of allergies is due to exposure. Those people who laugh too hard may have a loved one with allergies. That is something you should not be too quick to laugh at.

It is a shame that some airlines do not give free peanuts anymore, but it is better to not harm one paying passenger than to starve all the rest of hungry passengers who might not need to fast.

  • I sort of agree with Panda – we don’t put these signs up to be altruistic; we put them up to avoid lawsuits. That said, I probably go too far in trying to take care of everybody else’s contingencies. Meanwhile, I expect little for myself.  From a Randian and even a Christian point of view, that seems a bit hypocritical. I should do unto others as I would have them do unto me, and I should respect people to be as aware and smart as I hope that I am?

  • Sometimes people are just ill or sleepy or otherwise not up to par at all, and little warnings keep them from doing something they would normally always avoid.

Besides, with so many artificial ingredients in our foods these days, it wouldn’t have surprised me at all if someone told me there were *no* nuts in hazelnut coffee. :P

  • I think it’s just reinforcing the obvious when you “remind” people like that.  It took me a while to realize i was allergic to some different types of fish.  But once I realized I was getting to be allergic to a lot of them I stopped eating “new” kinds just to make certain I didn’t get sick at bad times like vacations or when I was out of town.

  • There is a fine line between enabling and helping.  Enjoy tomorrow and take photos:)

  • The US and western society in general seems a bit too protective of people.  Lawsuits for every little thing, when it seems that some common sense would suffice.

  • Today’s litigious society demands we err on the side of being obvious for legal protection.

Have fun at the meet up!

  • Turns out, many hazlenut coffees don’t actually contain hazlenuts…. it sounds crazy but I can see someone who usually uses a specific brand that doesn’t, needing to be reminded that this one does.
