Accountability
I’ve been running into a lack of accountability lately. It’s mostly with school and classmates right now. One of the most frustrating things to me about working with other people is having other people be accountable for their actions. It’s very easy to make excuses and just float along with the current. I probably could have gotten through college and grad school that way as well.
It can take a lot to be accountable. I understand that for a lot of people, accountability does not come easily. It means being able to admit your faults, your misdeeds and anything you may have dropped along the way. One would think that at some point in our lives, it would become easier to just be accountable for ourselves. As with maturity, I don’t think that accountability necessarily comes with age.
Case and point, last week, I and the rest of one of my class teams received an angry letter from a member of our team talking about how we were being unfair to her and how we needed to work together better and all of this other stuff. She had missed several meetings and blamed the rest of the team for not being flexible to her schedule. In reality, we were very flexible and the other three team members, myself included were all able to meet on time every time. This woman made all sorts of excuses about why she couldn’t be there and why she couldn’t get things done in time.
Excuses just don’t go over well with me at all. With all of her excuses, saying that she just forgot or something would have been better than anything else she spit out… sheesh.
What characteristic in others annoys you?

It would be nice if you could just pick the classmates to work with on a project rather than be assigned students picked by the teacher…which I am guessing probably happened .Have a great night hun !
It’s too bad that she would react like that to her own shortcomings. She probably thinks that the others in the team would drop every thing and cater to her needs. You need to tell her that this is not kindergarten, and to grow up.
Have wonderful life dear Meg.
Some people are really blind to their faults. Sorry you still gotta deal with those annoying teammates that are dead weight.
What really annoys me is when people invade my space without my permission. When I am standing in line anuwhere and someone gets so close to me they are breathing down my neck. I turn around and tell them to back off.
favorite voice mail message, from a realitor. “…If I don’t return your call within 24 hours, you can assume I’m dead…” His job is, in part, to talk to people and deal with their schedules. He was true to his word, as far as I know. Now that’s being responsible! I did not like group projects in school because there was always one… @styx_site - yes you do, in one way or another – brilliant!!!
People who use ‘emotional blackmail’ to get you to do what they want – e.g “If you don’t do it, I’ll have to do it”. Or, “I can’t find anyone else to do it”. Both comments can make someone feel very ‘selfish’ or ‘guilty’ if they say no. Even if someone ‘is’ unable to do the job themselves because they are already too busy or, even if they ‘genuinely’ cannot find anyone else, it is not right to try and put someone on the spot like this.
Procrastination drives me crazy!! Its something I constantly struggle with myself. But seriously! If you simply get something done, then you can really enjoy the things you want to do because there is nothing hanging over your head!! That isnt just with school – I see it in a lot of work places.
Lately is relative. I’ve been seeing a lack of accountability/responsibility for several years now. Take my job (please! lol). Mismanagement has brought Borders to the state it’s in, but they’re still punishing the employees with layoffs, shorter hours, lack of benefits, and more. There’s a lack of accountability in our government, nationally and internationally, and it’s been that way for at least 60 or so years. The same with banks and the whole bailout scheme. Or global warming. I saw a list the other day of those who say it’s real and those who say it’s fraud. The list who agree it’s real was at least 2 pages and all scientific and private groups. The groups that say it’s fraud was maybe half a page and consisted of oil and other lobbying companies who stand to profit from our use of oil, and yet no one will hold these people or our governments accountable 20-30 years down the road when the S*** hits the fan because by then, they won’t even be the same people. The lack of responsibility is pandemic at this point, extending into every nook and cranny of society.
Ugh. I hate people like that, that try to turn the situation around and make it your fault. It stinks. Hope things get better!
Hope you are okay (re: post after). Bless you!
