  • Don’t let the bed bugs bite

    Good night, sleep tight

Don’t let the bed bugs bite

    If they do

    Take a shoe

And beat them ‘til they’re black and blue

Oh yes, it’s a violent way to say good night I suppose but it’s fun to say. This is something that my grandparents and my parents used to say to myself and my sisters when we were little. I even taught it to a lot of the kids I babysat for back in high school (I’m sure their parents really liked that, lol). I have no idea where it came from. Is anyone else familiar with that little poem?

Growing up, I never really knew what bed bugs are. I believe that my mom told me that they weren’t real but on the other hand, she also told me that chipmunks were baby squirrels (I believed that for a long time) so I wasn’t too sure about her answers…

Unfortunately in the paper this morning, there was a story about bed bugs. They exist and there is apparently a resurgence of bed bugs in places like college dormitories, homeless shelters, hospitals and even hotels. ICK!

I suppose I’ll be sleeping with a heavy shoe perhaps even a heavy boot on my bedside table. You’ve gotta love when the things you learned as a child actually prepare you for the real world!

  • Embassy-ism

I found out through one of my non-Xanga blogs that this week is Thai Restaurant Week in celebration of the Thai New Year. This is in conjunction with the Thai Embassy. At select Thai restaurants in the DMV area, you can get 10% off. Since I didn’t have much to get done for school last night, the Architect and I had an impromptu date night and went to a Thai restaurant in our town’s downtown area.

It was so delicious. I had a curry that was sort of sweet and almost cinnamon-y. It had really tender beef and some potatoes in it. It really hit the spot.

I thought that the idea of an embassy supporting this event was really awesome. I wish some of the other embassies would have events like this (Mexican embassy, are you listening?). While I already love Thai food, there’s probably a lot of people out there who haven’t tried it but maybe this event will allow people new to Thai food to try it and love it like I do!

This week is going to end up being very multicultural for us. On Wednesday, we’re going to the Swiss Embassy through the Architect’s professional society. I think we’re watching a movie or a presentation. I just jumped at the chance to go to another embassy. A lot of the embassies down here in DC are in really, really cool buildings. For the past couple years, all of the European Union embassies have had an open house day sometime in May where you can go inside the embassies. Usually they’ll have snacks and different activities that you can participate in (movies, presentations, etc). My favorite embassy was actually the Slovenian embassy!

    What’s your favorite foreign cuisine?

  • Calgon, Take Me Away

I’ve always been jealous of people who can travel without a plan. They’re free to move about the world however they like because they don’t need a plan. I need a plan. I need to know where I’m going and at least have a general idea of where I will stay. Heck, I’m going to grad school for a degree in Project Management, which essentially means I want to plan stuff for a living. Flying free just doesn’t work well for me.

I’ve had three friends in my life that can truly travel with no plan in mind. I had lunch with one of them today.

Hombre just came back to the States about four days ago after being away for four months. He decided that he wanted to go Central and South America for awhile to practice his Spanish. He visited Chile, Ecuador, Panama, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Mexico while he was gone with no itinerary. He stayed in cheap places and with friends (he has a lot of friends down there since after college graduation, he went right to Mexico and traveled all over for about 6 months, until his money ran out).

He was supposed to come back on February 14th but decided that he wasn’t quite ready to come home so he stayed longer (once again, until his money ran out). Now it looks like he’ll stay in the States for awhile and he’s even looking for a job in the DC area versus going home to TX. Yay!

Do you think you could travel without a plan? Where would you go?
